About the October 23, 1983 Bombing of U.S. & French Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon

The bombings of U.S. Marine and French paratrooper barracks took place on the morning of October 23, 1983. The first attack occurred when a dump truck loaded with an estimated 12,000 pounds of explosives barreled through the front gates of the U.S. barracks, killing 220 Marines, 18 sailors, and 3 soldiers. Moments later, another truck drove into the French barracks in West Beirut, killing 58 French soldiers. The Islamic Jihad Organization was responsible for the attacks, which were carried out by Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group.

On March 1, 2018, a federal judge in Washington, DC granted a $920 million judgment to 80 victims of the 1983 Beirut bombing. Iran faced the lawsuit in connection with allegedly sponsoring Hezbollah, the militant group that carried out the attack. $2 billion in assets in a Citibank account in New York, once controlled by Iran’s central bank, has been frozen in connection with the 1983 Beirut attacks and other acts of terrorism allegedly funded by the Iranian government.
