Pharmaceutical errors no small matter

Many prescription drugs are strong and frequently cause side effects, so errors in dosage -- or, sometimes worse, mix-ups in the actual medication type -- are typically no small matter. Patients in Washington, D.C. and across the country rely on prescription medications -- and by extension, pharmacists -- to keep them safe and healthy. As such, pharmaceutical errors often have serious negative consequences, even for those victims lucky enough to survive.

In another state, a lawsuit alleging just such serious negative consequences has recently been filed by a parent on behalf of the injured patient, a minor. The civil claim accuses a local pharmacy of malpractice, alleging that the business negligently filled a prescription incorrectly. As a result, the patient suffered pain and anguish -- both mental and physical -- and repeatedly missed school.

The patient was prescribed the anti-anxiety and antidepressant medication Lexapro. Instead, the lawsuit alleges, the pharmacy incorrectly filled the prescription with the sedative Ambien. Perhaps worse yet, the business allegedly did so repeatedly, meaning the plaintiff continued to take what she thought was her correct prescription for a period of approximately six months, to the detriment of her physical and mental health.

As a result of the pharmacy's alleged negligence, the patient reportedly suffered paranoia and hallucinations, elevated heart rate, numbness, blurred and double vision hand lethargy. Not only do medication errors frequently cause pain and suffering, they often result in the victims and/or their families incurring high medical bills for the treatment they have to seek after experiencing the ill effects of medication mix-ups or incorrect dosing. Anyone in the Washington, D.C., area who has suffered similarly due to pharmaceutical errors or the medication mistakes of health care staff may wish to explore options for just compensation with an experienced area attorney.
