Medication errors can be life-threatening, even fatal

Washington, D.C. residents and individuals across the country rely on pharmacies like Walgreens for the prescriptions to help them regain, or maintain, their health. Most pharmacists are highly trained and conscientious, focused on ensuring the well-being of their customers. When medication errors do happen, the results can be life-threatening, as seems to be the case regarding a recently filed lawsuit in another state.

A man sued Walgreens, alleging that one of its pharmacists incorrectly filled his prescription. According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff went to the drug store chain to retrieve his muscle relaxant prescription. The medication was apparently intended to treat the injuries he had suffered in an automobile accident.

Per the complaint, instead of his correct medication, the Walgreens employee gave the man a prescription intended for another patient who shared the same name as the plaintiff. The medication the plaintiff mistakenly took was for a generic form of Xanax, an anti-anxiety drug. As a result of this pharmaceutical error, the lawsuit claims that the medication led the man to attempt suicide.

For this alleged life-threatening mistake, the plaintiff seeks damages to cover the incurred medical costs and other monetary damages. Even when they are lucky enough to survive, victims of medication errors are often left with medical expenses for the care they end up needing to address the physical results of taking the wrong medication. Anyone who has similarly suffered serious injuries due to careless mistakes made by a Washington, D.C. pharmacy can explore their options for just compensation with a medical malpractice attorney experienced in cases involving pharmaceutical errors.
