Help for Washington, D.C. slip-and-fall accident victims

Falling due to negligent maintenance in a Washington D.C. parking lot or store is one thing; unacceptable and awful, but not unheard of. More difficult to imagine, perhaps, is a slip-and-fall accident that occurs at a medical facility. Such a place, one would expect, would be extra careful about safety and would make sure to take extra precautions. However, a recently filed complaint in another state alleges just such an occurrence.

The lawsuit was filed by a woman who says she slipped in a puddle of liquid -- likely water -- and fell and injured herself, all while at a health care facility. In Oct. 2015, the woman was walking from a prep room at the medical facility to the area in which her colonoscopy procedure was to take place. According to the complaint, it was during this short trek that she slipped in the unidentified puddle and fell, suffering serious injuries as a result.

As a result of her fall, the woman apparently suffered disfigurement and mental anguish, in addition to monetary issues such as resultant medical expenses and loss of earning capacity. The plaintiff names as defendants both the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston and UTMB Healthcare Systems Inc. She accuses them of negligence because of their alleged failure to warn of such dangerous conditions.

For this alleged negligence, the lawsuit requests monetary relief in excess of $200,000, as well as interest and all legal fees. While sometimes victims in fall accidents may be confused or embarrassed and avoid seeking the compensation they may need and deserve, such accidents can be very damaging, leaving victims with costly medical expenses and long-term pain. Anyone in Washington, D.C. who has been injured in a slip-and-fall accident due to the apparent negligence of a property owner may benefit from exploring their legal options with an experienced premises liability attorney, who can help such individuals fight for just compensation.
