Many providers refuse responsibility for medical malpractice

Accurate and timely diagnoses are essential for patients in Washington, D.C. Despite this, a significant number of patients nationwide report having experienced medical errors when seeking treatment. This type of widespread medical malpractice is especially disconcerting when health care providers refuse to take responsibility for their own actions.

A recent study from two major institutions discovered that around 21 percent of people have been the victim of medical errors. The reasons for errors varied, but researchers determined that there were seven main contributing factors. Nearly 70 percent of victims blaming a health care provider's inattention to detail. Perhaps more upsetting is the 59 percent who say their doctors refused to listen to their concerns.

These are serious roadblocks in the path to treating patients efficiently. Unfortunately, 20 percent of respondents who claimed to be victims of medical errors also reported that their providers attempted to hide or alter records of mistakes. That majority of patients affected by medical errors also reported that their providers were completely unaware that mistakes had occurred until it was brought to their attention, and many refused to take responsibility.

Nearly three-fourths of the surveyed victims experienced permanent impacts on their physical and emotional health, finances and family relations. This is sadly not an uncommon outcome of medical errors in Washington, D.C., which can range from missed diagnoses to medication errors and much more. Although there is no undoing the harm of a negligent provider, successfully pursued medical malpractice claims can provide appropriate compensation for related damages, such as medical bills and pain and suffering.
