Lawsuit alleges surgical errors led to permanent disability

In Washington, D.C., no matter how necessary and life-saving a surgical procedure may be, surgery usually causes most people to worry. Rightly so, as surgical procedures all carry some degree of risk; things can go wrong even with the most highly trained and experienced of surgeons. Unfortunately, at the other end of the spectrum lies surgeons who are not careful enough, and when a patient places his or her trust in a health care professional only to suffer due to surgical errors caused by careless inattention, someone should be held responsible.

In another state, a recent lawsuit is attempting to do just that. A woman has filed a complaint alleging that several health care professionals negligently failed to remove a bulb syringe from her body after her hysterectomy. The lawsuit accuses both St. Elizabeth Hospital of the Hospital Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis and a doctor there of failing to administer proper and adequate medical care.

Per the official complaint, in Aug. 2016, the defendants performed a robotic total laparoscopic hysterectomy and bilateral salpingectomy with a left ovarian cystectomy on the plaintiff. Allegedly, a bulb syringe was left inside of the woman when the surgeons failed to retrieve it at the completion of the surgery. The patient claims that, as a result, she has suffered severe and permanent injuries.

The lawsuit accuses the defendants of negligence for leaving the instrument in place following the surgical procedure and failing to perform a sufficient post-operative examination. Additionally, the defendants allegedly were negligent when they prescribed medication without a proper evaluation. In addition to the pain and injuries the woman experienced, she claims she has suffered disability, damage to organs and tissue, resultant medical expenses and loss of income. The plaintiff seeks a judgment in excess of $50,000 as well as all legal costs. Any Washington, D.C., residents who have similarly suffered due to surgical errors should know that there are experienced legal professionals who can offer counsel and support should injured individuals wish to explore options for pursuing justice and compensation.
