Cerebral palsy devastating outcome of physician negligence

Washington, D.C. parents usually spend the first few months of their baby's life becoming familiar with the day-to-day routine of parenting. Most expect to change dozens of diapers and wake throughout the night for feedings, but few anticipate that they might have to deal with something much more serious. Fetal distress during labor can have devastating outcomes, such as cerebral palsy, which has lifelong implications.

Cerebral palsy can develop for many reasons, including ones outside of physician control. However, just because physician negligence is not always the cause does not mean that it is never the cause. Many babies develop cerebral palsy because of a lack of adequate monitoring, which can inform a physician when a baby is experiencing fetal distress and a cesarean section is necessary.

Any delay in performing a necessary C-section can have life-altering consequences. Putting off this medically-necessary procedure can extend the period in which a baby experiences decreased oxygen flow to the brain, one of the main causes of cerebral palsy. Head trauma during birth with prolonged bleeding -- another consequence of hesitating to perform a C-section -- can also cause otherwise healthy newborns to develop this condition.

Cerebral palsy is a lifelong condition with no cure, and individuals in Washington, D.C. who suffer with this condition require specialized care and medical equipment. When this condition is the consequence of a health care provider's failure to adequately monitor both mother and child, it is important to hold him or her accountable. Medical malpractice claims are not only essential for obtaining just financial compensation, but can also protect future patients from enduring similar mistakes.
