Physician, hospital negligence alleged in heparin lawsuit

With hundreds, if not thousands of patients across the country requiring hospitalization on a daily basis, Washington, D.C. residents have the right to expect a certain standard of care from a medical staff. Unfortunately, this trust in health care professionals is sometimes misplaced. In a nearby state, a couple has recently filed a lawsuit alleging physician and hospital negligence.

The man and his wife filed a complaint against several physicians and the hospital at which they are employed after the husband received treatment there in Jan. 2015. Per the complaint, the man was treated for shortness of breath and was given heparin before being transferred to the hospital now named as one of the defendants in the lawsuit. While in this hospital's care, the plaintiff required treatment for a variety of heparin-induced ailments, including but not limited to kidney failure, ischemic bowel and thrombocytopenia.

The treating physicians and the hospital are all liable, according to the plaintiff, because they failed to recognize the signs of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. Additionally, despite positive lab tests indicating the condition, they failed to take appropriate action in a timely response. For this negligence, the couple have requested trial by jury against the defendants.

In addition to court costs, the plaintiffs are seeking judgment in an amount exceeding $35,000. As often happens in successful medical malpractice lawsuits, much – if not all – of any damages awarded may potentially go toward medical bills and costs for treatment, both past and present, related to the incident. While medical malpractice lawsuits may be notoriously difficult to win, sometimes a successfully fought suit with the representation of an experienced malpractice attorney is the only way that Washington, D.C. victims of hospital negligence can get the funds they need to pay for the resultant medical costs.
