Washington, D.C., drunk driving accident claims life of pedestria

Fatal car accidents are always a tragedy. Even worse, though, is knowing the crash could potentially have been avoided, but someone made the selfish and reckless decision to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated, and, in doing so, took the life of another, even if the act was unintentional or just plain thoughtless. Tragically, just such a fatal drunk driving accident apparently occurred recently in Washington, D.C.

The crash occurred early on the morning of Saturday, July 8, according to reports from D.C. police. A pedestrian was on the sidewalk when a car allegedly came speeding down the street, traveling south, but crossed over into the lane going north. The vehicle then reportedly jumped the curb and struck the pedestrian at around 12:30 a.m.

Tragically, the pedestrian was declared dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the speeding car, a 33-year-old woman, has since been arrested in connection with the incident. She is currently facing charges of involuntary manslaughter and driving under the influence.

Unrelated to the criminal charges she is facing, the woman may end up involved in a civil suit as well if the family of the pedestrian who was killed chooses to speak with a personal injury lawyer to explore grounds for a wrongful death suit against her. While a successfully presented suit could not, of course, bring back the lost loved one, it could mean an award of monetary damages to the grieving family, which might be used for funeral expenses and the like. Furthermore, it could potentially help provide a sense of closure and justice. In fact, anyone in Washington, D.C., and the surrounding area who has lost a loved one in a drunk driving accident could benefit from seeking the counsel of an attorney with experience handling cases of a similar nature.
