Severe burns beg question: E-cig battery a defective product?

Most Washington, D.C., consumers are likely at least familiar with e-cigarettes and, in fact, may be vapers themselves. Many individuals across the nation are switching from traditional tobacco products to e-cig devices in the hopes that they are a safer alternative. Unfortunately, at least for one man, this allegedly defective product was anything but safe.

A man and his wife have filed a product liability suit naming two vape shops and a battery manufacturer after his e-cigarette and batteries exploded and caught fire in the man's pants pockets. The man was rushed for treatment to a local hospital, where he was diagnosed with severe second and third-degree burns. His medical costs already total over $200,000 for treatment, and further expenses are likely forthcoming as he is expected to need skin graft surgery.

The couple's lawsuit names the e-cigarette vape shops Tobacco Zone and Rockin Vape as defendants, as well as the batter manufacturer LG. The product liability suit alleges that the defendants were negligent in that they never provided any warning to the plaintiff of a risk of explosion and that the batteries were defective. Not only has the man been unable to work since his injury, but his wife is seeking additional damages for the way the incident has negatively affected their marital relations.

This is not the first product liability suit to be filed by injured e-cigarette users, though the injuries suffered by the plaintiff in this case are allegedly some of the most severe to date. Washington, D.C., vapers have the right to know of the potential risks and hazards associated with this apparently defective product. Anyone who has been injured by this or any other dangerous product does has the legal right to explore options for justice and compensation with a personal injury attorney.
