Two passengers killed in fiery Washington, D.C. area car crash

A grand jury after has charged a man with involuntary manslaughter after the deaths of two people. The defendant was the driver in a Washington, D.C.-area car crash that occurred on Jan. 22. The high-speed accident resulted in the deaths of both of the car's other occupants.

The incident started early that morning when a police officer attempted to pull over a vehicle that was traveling over 90 miles per hour in a posted 45 mph zone. A high-speed chase ensued, but the officer quickly lost contact with the speeding car. Only a brief time later, that same officer came upon the vehicle where it had crashed into a tree and caught fire. The driver managed to escape, but both of the passengers – a young man from West Virginia and a Washington, D.C., man -- died in the flames.

Prosecutors dropped all misdemeanor charges against the driver. However, the jury still handed down two indictments for involuntary manslaughter, each of which carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison. The defendant is also facing charges of speeding more than 20 miles per hour over the posted limit.

The defendant is schedule to appear in court for a three-day jury trial in November 2017. Regardless of the outcome of the criminal case, however, the families of the two deceased passengers may choose to consult an attorney for pursing wrongful death suits against the defendant. In fact, anyone in Washington, D.C., or the surrounding area who has suffered the loss of a loved one in a car crash due to another's driver's fault or negligence might benefit from the legal counsel of an attorney with experience in similar cases.
