J&J product liability case may affect Washington DC residents

A jury in Texas ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay over $1 billion in a recent settlement. The product liability lawsuit against the company claimed they covered up defects in their product, Pinnacle artificial hips, which then had to be removed surgically. This lawsuit took place in Texas, but Johnson & Johnson still faces approximately 8,900 similar cases accusing them of mishandling the artificial hips, and residents of Washington D.C. or anywhere in the nation could be affected by the faulty product.

The company only stopped selling the devices after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration increased regulations for artificial hips in 2013. A federal jury concluded that officials within the company knew the metal-on-metal Pinnacle hips were defective but failed to properly warn patients or doctors about the risks. Per court filings, this verdict includes over $30 million dollars in actual damages for the six plaintiffs in this case, and more than $1 billion in punitive damages.

The Johnson & Johnson company still faces almost 9,000 lawsuits involving the artificial hips. This does not even include the other cases brought against the company this year alone. Of the seven largest product defect verdicts delivered this year by U.S. juries, Johnson & Johnson has been involved in six, three of which were for claims that its talc products caused ovarian cancer.

Individuals in Washington D.C. who have been injured or suffered medical complications as a result of the Pinnacle artificial hip or other faulty Johnson & Johnson products may benefit from seeking legal counsel. An attorney with experience in product liability and medical malpractice cases would be able to explore various legal options available to clients and pursue avenues for monetary compensation. Damages awarded in successfully presented cases for medical complications and pain and suffering can be used towards, among other things, medical expenses and lost wages.
