Drowsy driving could cause car crash incident in D.C.

In Washington D.C. and nationwide, car accidents due to the fault of another have a variety of causes, with drunk driving generally being the first that comes to mind. However, a frequently disregarded car crash statistic may be that of people who drive while drowsy. While it's an unintentional and perhaps easily overlooked way of endangering both oneself and other drivers and their passengers, it can have disastrous results.

According to recent survey results, as many as one in 25 drivers have admitted to getting behind the wheel despite being sleepy. On average, a majority of these sleep-related crashes occur between the hours of six and seven in the morning, often because drivers miss signs that they are too drowsy to be operating a vehicle. Even if the driver only dozes off for a few seconds behind the wheel, that can be all it takes to cause a major car accident that could result in serious injury or even death.

This is especially the case when the accident involves semi trucks, as these vehicles can weigh as much as 80,000 pounds and thus do major damage in a car crash. The commercial trucking industry is subject to strict regulations on the length of time a driver can operate a vehicle at one stretch. However, the interstate that reports the highest number of drowsy driving fatalities -- I-37 between San Antonio and Corpus Christi, Texas -- is also heavily populated with tractor-trailer rigs. While the same recent study found that drowsy driving accidents do have the highest rate on highways like this one, these crashes can just as easily occur in large cities like Washington D.C., with 1.13 percent of accidents happening on city streets.

Whether car accidents occur due to another driver falling asleep behind the wheel, driving drunk or other negligence, victims do have options. Any resident of Washington D.C. who has been injured in a car crash due to another driver's negligence may choose to seek the counsel of an attorney. Attorneys with experience in personal injury lawsuits can offer victims guidance on how best to seek monetary recompense for their pain and suffering as a result of another's negligent driving.
