The fall season brings unique challenges for drivers and others

Now that the autumn weather is here, it is time for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists to take a few minutes to brush up on some basic autumn safety tips. This season has several unique challenges that drivers have to take into consideration. Some of these challenges are things that pedestrians and bicyclists should also be aware of.

Drivers have to keep an eye out for the increase in pedestrian traffic that comes with the fall season. This includes the school children who are walking to and from bus stops and school. It also includes the Halloween foot traffic that occurs during the trick-or-treat activities.

Everyone needs to be aware of falling leaves. While you might see the fallen leaves as a fun part of fall, they are actually very dangerous for everyone. Leaves that are on the ground can be slippery, especially after a rain. Leaves that are on the roads and sidewalks could obstruct markings that are meant to improve safety.

The fall season also brings visitors to the area who are watching the changing trees. The beauty of these trees is marvelous, but when drivers aren't paying attention to the road because they are distracted by the beauty of the trees, accidents can occur.

Driving at safe speeds and staying free of distractions can help drivers to get where they need to go safely. These can also protect others near traffic. Despite these warnings, there will still be car accidents in the Washington, D.C., area. If you are one of the victims of a car accident, you might decide to explore the option of seeking compensation for your injuries.
