What kinds of brain injures can take place after an impact?

Brain injuries come in many forms, from concussions to hematomas. Traumatic injuries to the brain can lead to a plethora of side effects and symptoms including memory loss, amnesia, trouble with speech and others. These injuries often require ongoing medical care. Checkups and treatment can be costly. The victims may not be able to work due to symptoms, which forces them to seek out compensation for bills and lost wages.

One type of injury that could be suffered is a concussion. Concussion injuries usually occur after a blow to the head. For example, in a car accident, you could suffer a concussion if you hit your head on the dashboard. After this injury, you could find yourself with persistent symptoms like headaches or memory loss. Some concussions resolve completely, but not all do.

Hematomas are another kind of injury you could suffer. Hematomas happen when there's a blow to the head that impacts the brain. The brain then ruptures, causing bleeding inside the skull or between the membranes of the brain. The problem with these injuries is that there is not much room for swelling, so the injury itself can get worse without treatment.

Other kinds of head and brain injuries include skull fractures and contusions. Both can occur from impacts and penetration injuries. Contusions, which are bruises on the brain, are normally right under the impacted area, while fractures may be visible from the outside or could feel like a dent in the bone. Some fractures won't impact the brain, while others require surgery to relieve pressure from a depressed fracture.
