Ensure your child is properly restrained in the car

Car accidents are one of the leading causes of death for children. It is possible that children who are involved in accidents might be seriously injured instead of dying. In that case, the child could be looking at considerable medical care long into the future.

The risk of death and the risk of serious injury are reasons why car seat usage is so important. It isn't enough to simply place a child in a safety seat or have them put on a seat belt. The car seat, booster or seat belt have to be used properly if you want to protect your child. One study involving 3,500 car seat and booster observations found that a whopping 72 percent of them were being used in a way that increased the possibility of the child suffering harm.

If your child is a placed in a child safety seat properly, the risk of death decreases by 54 percent for toddlers and 71 percent for infants. Using booster seats for children who are 4 to 8 years old can reduce the risk of serious injury by 45 percent, and seat belt use by older children reduces the risk of death or serious injury by 50 percent.

If your child was in a car seat, using a booster or secured by a seat belt and was still injured in a car accident, you might decide to take action. Filing a claim for compensation for your child's injury is the first step in trying to ensure that you are going to be able to afford the care your child needs in the future.
