Fatal semi-truck accidents seem to be trending down

Semi-truck accidents are particularly serious, and they can often be deadly. Around 111,000 people were injured in semi-truck accidents in 2014, which is the most current year for which information is available. That same year, 3,903 people were killed in these accidents. The results are mixed when you compare those figures to the previous year.

In 2013, an estimated 95,000 people were injured in semi-truck accidents, which means that the rate of injury increased by 17 percent. In 2013, 3,981 people were killed in collisions with big rigs, as evidenced by a 2 percent decrease from 2013 to 2014. The decrease in fatal accidents isn't a one-time aberration, as between 2005 and 2014, fatalities from semi-truck accidents decreased by 26 percent.

The location of those killed in accidents in 2014 indicate something interesting. Ten percent of the people who were killed weren't in vehicles; these statistics include both pedestrians and bicyclists. Occupants of other vehicles accounted for 73 percent of fatalities, while 17 percent of deaths occurred to those driving or riding in the large trucks.

Statistics bear out the similar positions of those injured in crashes involving semis. Three percent were non-occupants, 23 percent were riding in the semi-truck, and 74 percent were in other types of vehicles.

The vast majority of the trucks involved in these fatal accidents had damage to the front end, with 61 percent showing evidence of impact damage.

All of these accidents devastated families, and those family members who had to suffer through the effects of these accidents were left to pick up the pieces. If a negligent trucker was at fault, claims for compensation by the family members of those left behind might help to make ends meet.
