What should parents know about birth injuries?

A child who suffers from an injury at birth might be facing a lifetime of challenges. In some cases, such as when the injury results in cerebral palsy, those challenges might be physical, mental and even social. Many times, children who suffer birth injuries require extensive care as they grow up and well into adulthood. A multitude of services, such as medical specialists, therapists and others might be necessary. For that reason, parents might opt to seek compensation for the birth injury that the child suffered.

Contrary to popular belief, not all birth injuries are noticed immediately. There might be some signs when the child is born, but it is often necessary to watch the child as he or she grows. In some cases, a child not hitting milestones properly is a key marker that something is amiss.

The issues that a child has don't have to be severe in order for the parents to seek compensation for a birth injury. The main point is that there has to be some level of issue with the child that can be linked to the birth injury. The parents also have to ensure that they take action within an appropriate amount of time. The statute of limitations dictates how long parents have to file the claim.

Many birth injury cases hinge of specific scientific and medical evidence, such as the Apgar scores of the child when he or she was born. The factors included in the Apgar score are appearance, pulse, grimace, activity and respiration.Understanding this and learning how to apply the information to your case is crucial.
