What are the most common doctor errors?

No one wants to face medical errors, but they take place all the time. As a patient, you have a right to seek compensation for any negligence that leads to your injuries. Here are a few errors to keep an eye out for.

What are the main medical errors that take place?

There are nine main medical errors that lead to the most patient injuries. These include adverse drug events, ventilator-associated pneumonia, central-line associated bloodstream infections, injuries from falls, obstetrical adverse events, bed sores, blood clots, surgical site infections, and catheter-associated urinary tract infections.

As a patient, how do you protect yourself from doctor errors like the above?

The key to prevent infections like central line-associated bloodstream infections would be to ask the nurse or doctor to wash their hands and the location where the catheter is going to be inserted before the act is performed. Alcohol swabs should always be used before insertion, because this kills bacteria surrounding the point of insertion. This helps prevent bacteria from entering the puncture wound.

To prevent falls, patients should use a call button to reach out to a nurse for aid. Walkers and supports should be used to cross rooms for those who are unable to walk comfortably.

Bed sores are a common problem if patients are not moved often enough. To avoid these, it's important that patients are moved, turned, adjusted, and that their weight is shifted. These sores typically develop if the same area of the body is forced to hold the brunt of pressure over time; by moving, the issues can generally be avoided.
