Cesarean section deliveries aren't without risk

Cesarean section deliveries have increased dramatically in recent years. Some women enjoy the convenience of being able to schedule the delivery of their child. Other women find out that they must have this surgical delivery when something goes amiss during the pregnancy or labor. In all cases, women must understand that c-sections aren't without risks to her and the baby.

Babies who are delivered via a c-section are more likely to suffer from low APGAR scores, breathing problems and physical injuries. The physical injuries can be caused by the baby being cut when the c-section is being performed. It is estimated that one or two babies out of every 100 delivered via a surgical delivery suffer from a nick or cut.

A c-section is a major surgery. Even though most women who have this type of surgery aren't sedated, the procedure is still one that can have significant impacts. There is a risk of blood loss during the procedure. Around one to six out of every 100 women who have a c-section require a blood transfusion because of blood loss.

It is possible that the woman will suffer injuries to her bladder, bowels or other organs during the surgery. Scarring might occur on the uterus that could lead to complications during future pregnancies.

In some cases, the period after the surgery is completed is traumatic. Some women can suffer from infections and an extended recovery period. Reactions to medications can also occur.

If you or your baby is injured during a c-section, you might opt to hold the doctor accountable by filing a claim for compensation. Learning about the process might help you feel more in control of the situation.
