Undiagnosed periodontal deisease can lead to periodontitis

Many people visit a dentist once every 6 to 12 months for a regular checkup. During that visit, the dentist should check the patient's gums to ensure they are healthy. If the dentist doesn't properly diagnose gum problems, it can lead to problems for the patient. One of the serious issues that can occur when periodontal disease isn't diagnosed is periodontitis.

Periodontitis is an infection that begins in the gums. It can affect the bones and soft tissues in the mouth. When periodontitis is left untreated, there is a chance that you can loose teeth. Severe cases can lead to strokes and heart attacks, as well as other serious health issues. Other complications that are associated with periodontitis include asthma, respiratory problems, premature or low birth weight babies, or rheumatoid arthritis.

There are several risk factors that can increase the chance that someone will suffer from periodontitis. These include diabetes, gingivitis, poor oral hygiene, poor nutrition, tobacco use, substance abuse, and decreased immunity.

When periodontitis is diagnosed, there are several options that might be used to treat the problem. These include antibiotics, root planing, scaling, and surgery. One factor that can determine the type of treatment used is the severity of the periodontitis.

If you notice signs of periodontitis, make sure that you visit the dentist. These signs include pus between the teeth, red gums, swollen gums, painful gums, bad breath, gums that recede from your teeth, and loose teeth. If your dentist doesn't take appropriate action and you suffer from ill effects, you might choose to seek compensation for those ill effects.
