Hospitals may perform unnecessary C-section deliveries

When you're having a baby, there are a few options for delivery for most women. You can either have a Cesarean section or a vaginal delivery. Around 1.3 million children are born via C-section each year, and if that number seems high, that's because it is. While there are many factors involved in determining if you're going to have a C-section, sometimes they're ordered unnecessarily. These operations may be needed in special circumstances, like if you could have a child who is too large for the birth canal or complications that require a quick delivery.

If you don't want to have a C-section, or have a low-risk pregnancy, the risk of having one just because of the hospital you go to prefers them can be a problem. Most of the time, your medical team will only do a C-section when it's necessary, but sometimes they aren't. There are times when C-sections are performed but vaginal deliveries would have been safer for both the child and mother.

A surgical birth poses risks to you as a mother and raises the cost of giving birth overall. You'll have to heal from a major surgery, and this can be exhausting for your body. Unnecessary C-sections are negatives for new families who hope to have a healthy delivery and lower cost for delivery.

The rate of C-sections varies by hospital, but many are over the percentages that would be accepted. If you're given one and are told it is necessary, make sure you know the facts before you consent. You may be taking unnecessary risks that could be dangerous for you and your child.
