Secondary injuries are possible after brain injuries

All of the effects of a brain injury won't necessarily show up right at the time of the injury. There are some effects, known as secondary injuries, that can show up as soon as 12 hours after the primary brain injury or as long as 10 days after the primary brain injury. These secondary injuries can be devastating.

Collision between firetruck and van leads to 7 injured victims

Multiple-vehicle crashes are particularly dangerous to those involved. While a single crash is bad enough, those involved in multi-vehicle crashes can be hit several times before the collision resolves itself. If you've been involved in one, it can be complicated to know who is to blame. Even in a two-vehicle accident, there are situations when you can't be 100 percent sure who should be held liable for the collision. It could be the other driver, another vehicle, or even the city for defective traffic lights.

Failure to diagnose can be difficult to prove

In one of our previous posts, we discussed the fact that skin cancer is sometimes misdiagnosed. Other conditions, including other cancers, heart attacks, and strokes, can also be misdiagnosed. In all of those cases, the patient can suffer harm. Even when there is harm present, it can be difficult to seek compensation.

Can you sue if skin cancer is misdiagnosed?

Having cancer or other diseases misdiagnosed can put you in a precarious position. If your disorder or disease worsens because of a misdiagnosis, you may be in a position to make a claim, since you could have treated it sooner. Sometimes, people don't think they can claim when a doctor misdiagnoses them, but that's not always the case.

Despite the loss of human lives, the New England Journal of Medicine comes out in favor of morcellators

For decades, surgeons used power morcellators in hysterectomies and in myomectomies, a procedure to remove uterine fibroids. Unfortunately, for women with undiagnosed uterine cancer, power morcellation causes cancer to spread throughout the abdominal cavity. This can take a relatively treatable Stage 1 cancer and transform it into Stage 4 cancer within weeks.

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy: A delayed condition

The effects of a brain injury are very scary, but the thought of chronic traumatic encephalopathy is even more scary. CTE is a condition that occurs in many people who have suffered multiple concussions. The most scary aspects of this condition are that the symptoms don't show up for years, usually eight to 10 years after repetitive concussions, and the only way that it can be definitively diagnosed is during an autopsy.

What is the statute of limitations in Washington?

If you're hurt when a doctor is negligent or your medical care doesn't go as expected, you may be able to file a medical malpractice claim. Filing a medical malpractice case in Washington, D.C. means you have to abide by specific laws within the district. For instance, the time limitations on your case are different than in some other parts of the United States. In Washington, D.C., the statute of limitation states that you have three years from the time of an injury to file a claim against a medical provider. For minors, they can wait up to three years following their 18th birthdays, giving them the time to decide if they want to file a claim once they're legally old enough to do so.

Car accidents can lead to amnesia

Head injuries and brain injuries are common in a car accident. For some people who are involved in car accidents, suffering from memory loss is possible. When a people lose their memories, they are said to have amnesia. While memories might come back after the accident, treatment and therapy are sometimes needed.

Sleep deprivation: A growing problem in the United States

Nurses, doctors, and other medical professionals work almost around the clock. The shifts they have are long and arduous; many stay at the hospital or clinics for 12 or more hours a day. With extreme conditions for these workers, as well as on-call hours outside the hospital walls, it's no wonder that sleep deprivation can be a concern. Unfortunately, being sleep deprived can cause major errors to take place when they otherwise would not.
