Winter Storm Ilias causes car accidents in Washington, D.C.

Car accidents can be common during the winter months, particularly if bad weather approaches suddenly. Drivers who are being careful and monitor the conditions can make a good decision on whether or not it's safe to be on the roads, if they should slow down or if they should pull over. Those who don't take the time to slow down or monitor the conditions correctly can cause accidents due to their negligent driving behaviors.

If you're involved in a collision caused by a driver who is ignoring dangerous weather conditions, you may be able to seek compensation for his or her negligence. This is something many may be doing around the United States' eastern coast, since Winter Storm Ilias has made its appearance.

According to a report, Washington, D.C., has suffered the worst blow from the storm, which hit recently. Ice-covered roads were hard to pass due to melting snow quickly refreezing, and thousands of people took hours to travel a short commute home. Some people left their vehicles on the highways to walk to shelter nearby after hours spent in traffic. One caller reporting the weather conditions stated that the Indian Head Highway hadn't been treated by the state, leaving drivers to struggle with icy, slick conditions that could easily lead to accidents.

Other drivers complained about being unable to safely navigate on and off ramps, making it difficult to leave the area safely. There were at least 100 accidents reported in Washington, D.C., and northern Virginia, with many drivers stranded for hours as they waited for the ice and snow to clear.
