Holiday challenges for people with post-traumatic stress disorder

Post-traumatic stress disorder is a mental health condition that affects many people with brain injuries. It can also affect those who have been involved in a serious accident. While many people are able to cope with the effects of PTSD and go on to live active lives, the holidays can pose a special challenge to a person with this condition.

There are several ways that the holiday season can affect a person with PTSD. Most commonly, the problem is that there are large crowds all around. People with PTSD might not be able to handle the constant motion, noise and close proximity of people when they go somewhere crowded.

Even if the event is full of family members and close friends, the person with PTSD might feel like an outsider because they are struggling with the constant stimulation. If alcohol is at the event, whether family members are the other partygoers or not, the person with PTSD might have more difficulty because of the enhanced effects that alcohol can have on him or her.

The holiday season is one in which the family members and friends of a person with PTSD must be especially understanding. If there are events that the person will attend, family members and friends can help them to understand what will be going on. This allows them to prepare. Find out ahead of time how the person with PTSD will cope with triggers that might be at the event. That enables you to help them. Finally, be understanding if they can't handle the event and need to leave.

Anyone who suffers from PTSD because of a brain injury that was caused because another party was negligent might choose to seek compensation for his or her injury. Learning about the options can help them plan how to handle their case.
