Research claims coma patients are being misdiagnosed

If you had a loved one who was in a coma or what doctors identified as a vegetative state, you'd want to believe that the medical providers knew that they were accurate in this description. The last thing anyone wants to find out is that a loved one may have survived if they had been left on life support another month or because a misdiagnosis prevented the right care to bring them out of a coma.

A May 29 report discussed this exact issue. In fact, the report claims that one in five patients who have been identified as being in a vegetative state were actually misdiagnosed. Being nonresponsive is not the same as being in a vegetative state. Often, the only way to know if a patient is completely nonresponsive is to look at brain scans and brain function.

In 2014, a neurological study showed that nonresponsive patients were still reacting to stimuli in the same way or close to the same way as those who were responsive. If the patient reacts at all, the patient is not brain dead or in a vegetative state; instead, that patient would be considered to be in a comatose state or could actually be said to be conscious and unable to communicate with the outside world.

The team of researchers are working toward a way to help those with minimal brain activity, so they don't suffer from the same fates as those who are deemed unresponsive and in a vegetative state. With the right medical care and support, the research shows that some of these patients may eventually be able to be revived.
