Misdiagnosis and delayed diagnosis can harm patients or be fatal

In our post on June 18, we discussed the case of the former emergency room nurse who was suffering from syringomyelia, a potentially fatal disease that involves cysts on the spinal cord. If you recall, she was misdiagnosed four times despite the fact that the cysts were evident on an imaging scan from her first encounter after experiencing symptoms. That woman's horrible story brings up an important point -- misdiagnosis of a patient's illness can sometimes have fatal consequences.

While the woman in that story is still alive, her life has been dramatically altered. Nobody should have to deal with a situation like that simply because a doctor didn't accurately diagnose a disease. We know how much a misdiagnosis can affect your life.

Syringomyelia isn't the only condition that can prove fatal if a proper diagnosis isn't made quickly. Think of how serious the consequences could be in the case of a misdiagnosed stroke, heart attack or malignant tumor. If the patient lives, considerable medical care and a loss of function are possible. Of course, in some cases, the patient won't live and that could spell disaster for the family members left behind.

We know that anyone who has suffered from a misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis might want to find out if he or she can seek compensation for his or her injuries. We can review your case to help you determine your course of action. For example, if your case involves test results that weren't properly read or interpreted like the woman in the previous post, you might opt to seek compensation because proving negligence would be possible.
