Diagnosis errors lead to terminal illness spreading for nurse

A dying emergency room nurse has decided to speak out about not being diagnosed with a life-threatening condition an astounding four times. According to her interview, the woman said she started getting headaches around her right eye and was feeling dizzy and nauseated. She was a nurse in an ER, so she knew the symptoms were potentially serious. At the time, she asked for tests and received an MRI and blood test.

Both of those tests came back normal, or at least that's what she was told. Because of that, she went back to work until she had another bout, falling sick while working with a man who had just had a heart attack. She was admitted to the hospital and received a spinal tap that was abnormal. Then, she was diagnosed with intracranial hypertension and treated to reduce pressure on her brain.

She went to a neurologist for further treatment, but she claims she was brushed off and told the medications were working. When she started having further symptoms of drooping on her face and slurred speech, she sought more help and finally received it.

At Johns Hopkins University hospital, she discovered that there had been cysts present on her spine in the MRI. Before her fourth appointment when she was told she was suffering from a serious condition called syringomyelia. The disease is fatal when left untreated, and thanks to the numerous failures of the doctors who saw her, the disease had progressed. She now suffers from heart failure and is wheelchair bound. Her prognosis is not good, and it's expected that the disease will be terminal in her case.

She's now working on making sure others don't get misdiagnosed in the same way.
