Takata air bags linked to explosions, deaths and injuries

Air bags have been created to save lives, and they're implemented in most vehicles created today. Sometimes, there are multiple air bags that can be triggered from any angle during an accident. Unfortunately, when an air bag goes wrong, it can lead to injuries that are severe. In one crash, this point was made clear when a woman was in an accident and the air bag exploded, shooting metal shards at her. That metal became embedded into her head.

The woman suffered severe head wounds from the crash, and not surprisingly, the air bag may have been at fault. Recently, the woman's family found that the air bag was recalled due to the risk of it exploding, and now they know that there is a link between the unusual wounds from the accident that left their daughter dead and the popped air bag in the wrecked vehicle.

The air bags being recalled were created by Takata. There have been over 100 injuries and five deaths linked to the exploding air bags, according to the former administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the person responsible for investigating the problem.

It's possible that the chemicals used to quickly inflate the air bags are to blame. Ammonium nitrate is used by Takata to create all their air bag systems, but the chemical is volatile and even used to create bombs. If the bag warms to over 100 degrees, the chemical can be unstable and could lead to an explosion. Takata has said that by using a less-concentrated mix of the ammonium nitrate, the replacement air bags for the recalled parts will be safe.
