GM ignition switch linked to deaths of 87 car accident victims

If you've followed the news about the company General Motors and the ignition switch recall that resulted in 2.6 million vehicles, including 2.2 million in the United States being recalled by the company, then you may already be familiar with the fact that the cases of injuries were taken to court. Several people lost their lives in accidents involving the faulty ignition switches, and at the last reported count, 87 approved wrongful death compensation claims have been made.

According to the news from April 20, the claims had stood at only 19 in September but climbed rapidly since then. In the claims, the individuals noted that the ignition switch would move from the "run" to the "off" or "accessory" positions instead of staying in place. This led to the vehicle losing power and causing accidents. Unfortunately, that also meant the driver couldn't control the car well and that the air bags weren't likely to respond in a crash.

The ignition switch was used in many kinds of vehicles from Saturn Ions to Chevrolet HHRs. The claims resolution facility's program has shown that of the claims made, 1,335 have been made ineligible, 1,141 were deficient, and 1,085 are still under review.

It's also important to note that 244 claims were eligible recently to be heard, 11 were added as Category 1 claims, and another 146 could be Category 2 claims. Category 1 and 2 claims represent injury types. Category 1 includes those with quadriplegia, permanent brain injuries or other disabilities. Category 2 represents those who needed to be hospitalized within 48 hours of a crash involving a recalled GM vehicle.
