What are brain injuries like?

Living with a brain injury in Washington, D.C., is a difficult and tiring road. The consequences of your injury can be unpredictable, making it hard to know what else you may be faced with. Brain injuries can cause changes in your personality, in the way you act or even in the way you think, making it harder for you to get through daily tasks without a challenge.

There are several things to know about brain injuries as a patient. Your injury is unique to you; no two brain injuries are exactly the same. The effects are hard to predict because of the different areas that can be affected. A healthy brain works without disruptions in electrical activity, but when the neurons can't get their signals through, then the brain is considered damaged. Even a mild injury can result in damage like a change in body temperature, mood or other problems.

About 2.4 million people suffer a traumatic brain injury each year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that the most common causes include falls (35.2 percent), being struck by or against items (16.5 percent), assaults (10 percent) and motor vehicle accidents (17.3 percent). The effects vary. For instance, if the cerebellum lobe is damaged, balance, visual perception, coordination and motor activities can be disrupted. Temporal lobe functions, including memory or hearing, can be impacted if the side of the head is struck.

There are many problems caused by brain injuries, and if you've suffered one, you deserve help. If you've suffered at the hands of a medical team that treated you with negligence, you may be able to seek compensation to help you get further treatment and care.
