Fatal car accident claims 5 lives, investigation continues

Driving on public roadways when the weather isn't great is something that requires considerable focus and experience. It also means that drivers should drive at a safe speed, and they should only drive if they are fully able to react in a sufficient manner to any obstacles they might meet along the road. For drivers near Washington, District of Columbia, recent rainy weather necessitated extreme caution. Sadly, one driver seems to not have paid attention to that need for caution.

The fatal accident happened Friday night in Oxon Hill when the driver of a Mercedes Benz smashed into an Acura. It is unknown whether alcohol or speed was a factor in this accident, but officials are looking into those possibilities.

When the accident occurred, the Acura was pushed into a telephone pole. That pole split in the middle. One car caught on fire. Piles of twisted up metal are all that was left the cars. Debris littered the street and sidewalk.

All told, this accident claimed the lives of five people. One of the people killed was in the Mercedes Benz, while the other four, including a 1-year-old baby, were in the Acura. Both drivers are in critical condition, and another man is injured.

As we have often said on this blog, accidents like this one are a tragedy -- possibly a preventable tragedy. For the people who were injured and those who lost loved ones, the journey toward healing is just beginning.

Anyone who faces a tragic accident might have a strong desire to hold someone responsible for the accident. That is possible by seeking compensation through the legal system.
