Civilian police cadet blamed for fatal car accident on interstate

Getting into an accident at a high rate of speed is something that isn't all that uncommon for people driving on the interstates in the country. Sadly, some of those accidents turn fatal. A recent accident along Interstate 495 is one of the accidents that involve a fatality, but this one had an unexpected twist. This accident might interest our readers in Washington, District of Columbia, because of that twist.

A little after 8:30 on a Friday morning, an 18-year-old civilian police cadet with the Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division was driving on the inner loop. He used an emergency vehicle crossover to get to the outer loop. He accelerated to a high rate of speed after pulling into the outer loop's fast lane, according to witnesses.

The civilian police cadet then lost control of his unmarked 2006 Ford Expedition. He sideswiped another vehicle, which was being driven by a female driver. That vehicle hit the wall after sliding into the left lane. The unmarked vehicle driven by the cadet started to spin and hit another vehicle.

The car accident, which closed part of the Capital Beltway for hours, claimed the life of a 59-year-old woman who was driving the sideswiped vehicle.. She was taken to Prince George's Hospital Center and pronounced dead there. The driver of the other vehicle hit by the cadet wasn't injured, and neither were her passengers.

When most people hear about accidents like this one, they probably don't expect the twist that a police cadet was responsible. Sadly, this cadet's need for speed claimed the life of a woman who was simply going about her day.

For the families that lose a loved one in accidents on the interstate, finding out the cause likely doesn't bring much comfort. The death will sometimes cause a burden on the family members because of the unexpected costs. Seeking compensation might not relieve the emotional burden, but it may help to relieve the stress associated with their finances.
