Medical malpractice linked to deaths of veterans across country

As a veteran, you expect the care you deserve. You may have been hurt in the line of duty, or you could have been faced with long-lasting mental injuries. If you're a family member of a veteran who has passed away during treatment at a Veteran's Affairs hospital, then you may be concerned. According to the report from May 14, you may have a reason to be.

An investigation into the VA hospitals around the country including near Washington, D.C., has shown that there are hundreds of patient deaths that could be linked to medical malpractice and medical mistakes. At the Atlanta, Georgia, hospital, for instance, there may have been instances of mismanagement, preventable deaths and other issues.

Between 2000 and 2012, there were nearly 1,200 claims against VA facilities around the nation claiming that medical mistakes were responsible for deaths. Twenty of those were for the Atlanta VA Hospital. Still, other cases popped up that were reportedly due to poor care leading to patient harm.

Since 2000, it's believed that the VA has paid out around $900,000 to settle claims of or pay judgments related to patient deaths or care. That money comes directly from taxpayers, who are the ones responsible for funding VA hospitals.

According to the story, the VA secretary will be appearing before the Senate's veteran's affairs committee in Washington. He will be responsible for explaining treatment delays, answering questions about veteran care and discussing preventable deaths within the VA system. According to the republican senator for Georgia, this step will help hold the people in charge responsible for the care that veterans are receiving throughout the system in the United States.
