Avoid driving with your pets in the front seat or on your lap

Pets can bring so much joy to life. Cuddly cats can provide comfort, fish can provide a meditative distraction from the cares of the day and dogs often serve as friendly and trusted companions. It is precisely for these reasons and many others that pet owners are often inspired to give their pets the best possible care and why pet owners often prefer not to be parted from their pets for any significant length of time.

When pet owners travel with their pets, they do not often prefer to place them in the backseat. It is far easier to keep an eye on them when they are in the front seat. However, it is imperative that if you are traveling with your pets that you properly crate them and secure them in the back seat. Failure to take this critical safety precaution could result in otherwise preventable car accidents.

Laws vary from state to state as to whether motorists are explicitly forbidden from driving with their pets on their laps. These laws also vary with regard to whether motorists are explicitly compelled to crate their animals while motor vehicles are in motion. However, laws do not need to insist upon this behavior for it to serve as common sense.

Even the most docile and predictable pets can become startled or agitated during travel. Drivers are too often distracted by their pets moving around on their laps or throughout the front seat. In the case of larger pets, their movement may even obscure the ability of drivers to see properly. Please, if you travel with your pets crate them and secure them in the back seat. A more convenient front seat ride is not a legitimate excuse to endanger yourself, your pet and other motorists as you are driving.
