Husband wins $776,000 in medical malpractice lawsuit

Unfortunately for patients, medical mistakes happen more often than some people may think. A recent medical malpractice lawsuit has drawn attention to the seriousness of surgical errors. Residents of the District of Columbia may be interested in the details of this recent case in case it could be applicable to their own similar situation.

The man at the heart of this malpractice suit just received the verdict in the case involving the death of his wife and was awarded $776,000. His wife started the legal action against a surgeon because of a diagnosis she received. Following a surgery she had to remove her gallbladder, she began having intense pain. She was told she was facing the last stages of liver disease and it was ultimately determined there were staples preventing bile from being released from her liver. This caused intense pain and resulted in her being hospitalized, at which time the diagnosis was made.

Although the staples were removed, the damage was not fixable. As a result, the woman was placed on the liver transplant list, but her life ended before she was able to receive a new liver. She was also diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease and ultimately spent her last days in a nursing home. Her husband said she asked him to finish the lawsuit against the surgeon since she knew she was dying.

Sadly, although this man won a large monetary sum and has drawn attention to medical malpractice occurrences, he is unable to share the outcome with his wife. Residents of the District of Columbia who feel they have received negligent healthcare or have grounds to take action against a medical professional may benefit from understanding the applicable laws. As is evident in this case, outcomes can be tragic. Hopefully for others, the outcome will be more positive and their error can be corrected.
