Handling professional advice that differs after a brain injury

Brain injury patients often have a lengthy treatment plan that usually includes several medical professionals. While each professional will cover a specific aspect of care, there are some instances in which the advice, thoughts or statements will vary from one medical professional to another. That can be a difficult situation for a patient or a patient's family member to be placed in.

The differences in the advice and opinions of medical professionals can stem from several factors. One primary factor is that not all brain injury patients respond to treatments in the same manner. This means that what works for one patient might not work for another.

Another reason is that patients have good days and bad days. When you combine those two factors together, you can get different opinions. A doctor who sees the patient on a good day might have a different outlook from a doctor who sees the patient on a bad day, which could account for the different advice.

When differences in medical advice come up, advocates for the patient should speak up. Let the doctors or therapists know that another person has given a different opinion or different advice. In some cases, a care team conference might be necessary so the entire team can get back on the same track.

As you can imagine, having to deal with more than one medical professional isn't only confusing, it is also expensive. If your loved one has suffered a brain injury because someone was negligent, you might opt to seek compensation. If compensation is awarded, it can help to offset the cost of necessary medical and personal care.
