Can a truck accident lead to amnesia for the victims?

Truck accidents can cause a variety of injuries. Some of the injuries aren't visible to the naked eye. In some cases, a person who is involved in a truck accident, especially if the accident is especially gruesome, the person might suffer from dissociative amnesia. This type of amnesia varies from the amnestic syndrome, which is the amnesia that leads to the global memory loss that is commonly seen in movies.

Why would an accident cause dissociative amnesia?

Overwhelming stress is often the cause of dissociative amnesia. This type of amnesia is associated with traumatic events, such as motor vehicle accidents, disasters, wars and abuse. When a victim has this type of amnesia, remembering the details of the accident is impossible. It can also affect the person's ability to remember personal information or memories of the past.

What are the treatment options for dissociative amnesia?

Once other medical reasons for memory loss are ruled out, a diagnosis of dissociative amnesia can be made. The treatment plan at that point focuses on helping the person to safely remember the events and learn how to cope with them. Psychotherapy, family therapy, cognitive therapy, creative therapy and clinical hypnosis are some of the options that might be included in a treatment plan.

The treatments for dissociative amnesia can be costly, especially if the victim has had to miss work because of the effects of the accident. Seeking compensation to help defray the costs of treatment and other costs associated with the truck accident might help the victim to feel less financial stress so they can focus on healing.
