Traumatic brain injuries: Your recovery may vary

You were injured during an operation, and now you have to live with a brain injury. These injuries are different for each person who suffers one, making it hard to know just how damaging it will be to your life. That's why getting compensated for the injury is important.

Traumatic brain injuries can vary in their symptoms, but it's important to realize that no matter what the injury is, it can cause significant pain and difficulties in life now and potentially in the future. A traumatic brain injury is caused by any sudden damage to the brain. The injury doesn't have to be a concussion; the injury can be an open wound like a gunshot wound or could be closed, like whiplash.

Open head injuries are known as penetrating injuries. These can be some of the most severe due to the physical damage to the brain. A bullet, for instance, would enter the brain and tear through the tissues, resulting in damage and tissue death. Symptoms would then vary depending on which part of the brain was injured. Closed head injuries are different because the symptoms are caused by pressure on the brain. Swelling from bruising, extra blood pooling on the brain or other issues can cause symptoms like seizures or blood clots that can be deadly.

Brain injuries are caused by a number of injuries ranging from simple falls to motor vehicle accidents or other kinds of collisions. Sport-related injuries can result in TBIs, especially in the form of a concussion. Hitting the head on the ground or colliding with other players on the field can result in mild to severe concussions that can cause major side effects and symptoms like seizures, memory loss and other issues.
