Neck pain might signal whiplash after a car crash

When you are involved in a car accident, particularly a rear-end collision, you might have suffered from a neck injury. One of the neck injuries that is common in this type of accident is whiplash. This soft tissue injury might be referred to as a neck strain or neck sprain. Our readers in Washington, District of Columbia, might be interested in learning a little bit about this condition.

What are the signs of whiplash?

The most obvious sign of whiplash is neck pain. Headaches, a burning sensation, dizziness and back pain can also be signs of whiplash. In severe cases, fatigue, trouble sleeping, depression and memory loss might occur.

How long does recovery take?

Generally, most patients who suffer from whiplash will recover in three months. The pain usually subsides after a few days to a few weeks. Some people who have suffered from whiplash might have long-lasting headaches or neck pain.

What are the treatments?

Whiplash might require the use of a cervical collar for two to three weeks. Medications, such as muscle relaxers or pain relievers, might be necessary. Anti-inflammatories might also help whiplash. Physical therapy sessions that include cervical traction might help. Applying heat might also help to relieve the pain.

As you can probably tell, the cost of treatment for whiplash can be considerable. This expense might make some victims have financial issues. In that case, the victim might choose to seek compensation for his or her injuries. Knowing how to do so through the civil court can often make the entire process a little less daunting.
