Misdiagnosis of veteran and other claims settled in 4 lawsuits

The Veterans Affairs Medical Centers have been in the news recently for the horrible way they are treating the men and women who fought so hard to defend our nation. The Coatesville Veterans Affairs Medical Clinic isn't exempt from this horrid treatment of former servicemen and women. In fact, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has paid almost $1.4 million to four families whose loved ones died due to medical malpractice at the clinic.

The most recent of these cases was one in which the clinic was accused of failing to monitor a patient. That case, which was filed in April of 2010 was settled in Dec. 2011 for $500,000.

Another case, which was because of a misdiagnosis or wrongful diagnosis, was settled for $300,000 in Aug. 2011. That case was filed in April 2010.

The third case, which was closed in Feb. 2008, was because of improper management of a psychiatric patient. That lawsuit was filed in Oct. 2005 and finally settled for $495,578.

The fourth case, which was settled in Jan. 2005, was over failing to monitor a patient. It was filed in June of 2003.

All told, the VA has an estimated 1,000 wrongful death claims that have resulted in $200 million in settlements. In response to the public outcry about how veterans are being improperly treated, President Obama announced that misconduct won't be tolerated.

Despite the seemingly strong stance the president has taken, the fact remains that some veterans have been injured and others have died because of the horrible actions of VA employees. Holding the parties who acted negligently accountable might bring some comfort to the injured veterans and the family members of the deceased veterans.

One way to hold them accountable is through seeking compensation for damages caused by the medical negligence. Knowing how to seek compensation for damages through the court system in Washington, District of Columbia might make the process easier.
