Positive news for pedestrians has been released

Being a pedestrian is not often easy in America. Most U.S. cities have been constructed as vehicle-friendly but not as pedestrian-friendly. Many areas of numerous American cities are not even outfitted with sidewalks, let alone with marked crosswalks and other necessary safety measures.

As a result, the number of pedestrian accidents that occur on an annual basis in the U.S. is startling. During the first six months of 2012 alone, nearly 2,200 Americans perished as a result of pedestrian accidents and thousands more sustained serious injuries. Thankfully, a new report suggests that pedestrians have new reasons to hope that they will remain safe while traveling in the future.

A new report on the state of pedestrian fatalities nationwide has been released by the Governors Highway Safety Administration. The report indicates that the rate of pedestrian fatalities likely declined significantly in 2013. If the preliminary data holds steady until the year's final data is analyzed, 2013 will mark the first year since 2009 that pedestrian fatalities declined throughout the country.

The preliminary report confirms that pedestrian fatalities dropped nearly nine percent during the first six months of 2013 as compared to the first half of 2012. This is especially welcome news given that pedestrian deaths jumped a staggering 15 percent between 2009 and 2012. Though 2013's year-long data has not yet been finalized and although pedestrians unfortunately still have numerous reasons to fear for their safety, data from the first six months of last year is certainly a promising trend reversal.
