Flushmate product recalled after toilet explosions

Toilets are necessary fixtures in all Washington, D.C., residences. Many people know what it's like to live with a faulty toilet. Maybe it runs for half an hour every time it is flushed, or maybe the chain wiggles loose regularly. While most of us can handle these minor toilet troubles, imagine what it would be like if your toilet exploded.

Unfortunately, several people have experienced toilet explosions and subsequent flooding due to a faulty plumbing product. The product is a flushing system called the Series 503 Flushmate 111 Pressure Assist, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission says it has the possibility of bursting so forcefully that the toilet tank explodes.

The CPSC announced that it has expanded the recall of the defective product to include those sold between March 2008 and June 2009. An earlier version of the product has been recalled before. The CPSC instructed those who have the product to contact Flushmate to receive a repair kit. In the meantime, it is important to stop using it, shut off the water that supplies the toilet, and relieve and pressure in the product by flushing the toilet.

Few people would expect that flushing the toilet could lead to injuries. If your porcelain toilet tank shatters, however, it is quite possible that you could sustain minor cuts at the least. If you are not sure what plumbing products are used in your toilet, it may be worth a quick check in the tank to make sure you're not sitting on a ticking time bomb.
